Welcome to the Irvine Lab at Scripps Research

Engineering Immunity

Engineering approaches grounded in immunology are a key to unlock novel treatments for cancer as well as infectious, inflammatory, and chronic diseases. The Irvine Lab merges immunology, biotechnology, and materials chemistry to engineer the immune system in new ways. We develop tools and technologies that enable precise control over immune responses—revealing new insights into immunity and creating novel treatments for cancer and infectious disease.

Based at Scripps Research in La Jolla, California, our interdisciplinary team works at the crossroads of chemistry, immunoengineering, and translational science. We have two primary research foci, developing technologies to enhance vaccine-elicited immunity and engineering cancer immunotherapies.

Our Research Focus

At the Irvine Lab, our work centers on two primary goals: enhancing vaccine-elicited immunity and engineering effective cancer immunotherapies.

Vaccine Engineering & Immune Timing

Developing delivery platforms and biomaterials to precisely control the timing and localization of vaccine components, optimizing immune responses.

Cancer Immunotherapy Design

Designing strategies to reprogram immune cells for effective tumor targeting and destruction.

Chemical & Materials Biology Approaches

Using synthetic chemistry and smart materials to study and guide immune function.
